A few days ago, hundreds of Hunter students and faculty participated in a walkout and rally in order to show solidarity with students in California and around the country as well as to protest budget cuts and tuition hikes that are being considered now in Albany. We the Undergraduate Student Government are proud that so many students took part in this action.
While people united and peacefully protested, there was another group of individuals that vandalized Hunter College, set off fire alarms, interrupted speakers and engaged in violence against Hunter students and property. We have reason to believe that most of these individuals who committed violent acts were not even Hunter students, but rather instigators from other colleges. These actions are not only unacceptable but they are degrading to the cause and the spirit of the National Day to Defend Public Education. A few of the individuals were arrested, none of them being Hunter students. We stand firmly against any type of violence or violent action that endangers any student of this institution.
We would like to continue to work with both students and the administration in order to continue to show solidarity with other schools, opposition to budget cuts and tuition hikes and to help make Hunter a safe environment for students. We hope that the students of Hunter as a whole will continue to make sure that our voices are heard and our opinions are considered in a safe and peaceful manner.
In Solidarity,
Hunter Undergraduate Student Government
